Mabel Florence O'Leary

September 22, 1921 - September 20, 2017

Mabel Florence O’Leary passed away peacefully on September 20, 2017 at the age of 95 just two days before her 96th birthday.

Mabel was born in Flatonia, Texas, on September 22, 1921 to William J. and Emma (Wasek) Huvar. She had two brothers W.J. and Norbert and a younger sister Laura (Watzlavick).

After high school graduation from Flatonia, Mabel went to Beauty College in San Antonio. Upon completing her training, she found a job in Columbus working in a beauty shop in the back room of the Style Shop.

About the same time Mabel came to town, a handsome man driving a new red sportster moved from San Antonio to begin his job for the Southern Pacific Railroad in Glidden. This gentleman began picking her up after work and taking her home where she lived with Liza and Truman McMann. The two new comers to Columbus – Mabel and Johnny – became a couple and were married on August 2, 1944. They were blessed with three children – a daughter Jane and sons John and Michael.

Mabel continued to work as a beautician for many years moving from the back of the Style Shop to the Cottage of Beauty. Later she worked for the city of Columbus for years until her retirement. After retiring, she enjoyed traveling on local bus tours and playing dominoes with her friends.

Mabel would want to be most remembered as a lady of strong faith and Christian values. She was a devout member of St. Anthony Catholic Church attending mass on a daily basis. She was also an active member of the Altar Society and a proud parent of three graduates of SAS. Perhaps she could be called one of the true saints of the parish.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her siblings.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories, brother-in-law, George Watzlavick; her children, Jane and Glenn Stromquist, John and Sandy O’Leary, and Michael and Carol O’Leary; grandchildren, Shelley and Joe Nelson, Kelly and Chris Knott, Brian and Courtney O’Leary, Kristen O’Leary, Megan and Robbie Holzman, and Katie and Jay Sartain; and great grandchildren, Johnathan, Victoria and Nicholas Nelson, Jacob and Carson Knott, Ryland, Brynnley and Camdynn O’Leary, Jack and Holt Sartain, and Kate and Conrad Holzman.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm; Parish Prayer Service and Rosary will follow at 7:00 pm at Henneke Funeral Home, Columbus, TX. Visitation on Saturday will be held from 8:00 am to 9:30 am at Henneke Funeral Home. No visitation at the Church.

Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017, 10:00 am at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus with Fr. Augustine N. Asante officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Columbus, TX. Pallbearers are Nicholas Nelson, Joe Nelson, Chris Knott, Jay Sartain, Brian O’Leary, and Steve Evans.

Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Catholic School Capital Campaign, 635 Bonham St., Columbus, TX 78934.
