Gladys Valasta Untermeyer McCaleb

August 21, 1924 - October 6, 2018

Gladys Valasta Untermeyer McCaleb, 94, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, October 6, 2018, after a brief battle with cancer. Gladys was born on August 21, 1924, in Frelsburg and was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellinger. Her parents were Arthur and Mary Untermeyer of the Brushy community.

She went to Columbus High School and got her first job in a bakery in Houston.

She went to work at Hughes Tool Company in 1941, during World War II, and met her husband, Charles W. McCaleb. They were married for 29 years and had one daughter and one son.

The couple moved to Columbus in 1963 and were members of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Gladys went to work at the Sheriff's Department in Columbus following the death of her husband in 1973 and worked there for 15 years.

McCaleb was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Brenda Kocian; one grandson, Chris McCaleb; one step-son, Gene McCaleb; and three siblings: Arthur "Sonny" Untermeyer, Raymond Untermeyer, and Joyce McIlvain.

She is survived by one son, Charles R. McCaleb, and his wife Cynthia of Bellville; one son-in-law, Frankie Kocian of Schulenburg; sister-in-law, Marianne "Petey" Untermeyer of Columbus; three grandsons, Jerry "Butch" Henneke, Jr. of Columbus, Dwayne Henneke of Bernardo, and Joe Robinson and wife Brandi of Katy; two great grandsons, Cody Henneke and Koldin Brown; and one loving great granddaughter, Payton Robinson.

Twelve nieces and nephews and their families survive, including Elaine Sundwall and husband Terry of Kempner; Mark Untermeyer and wife Cheryl of Manor; Mike Untermeyer of Houston; Ruth Untermeyer of San Antonio; Ken Untermeyer of Fayetteville; Steve McIlvain and wife Laura of Baytown; Susan Herrington and husband Darryl of Montgomery; Nancy Philabaum and husband Joe of Fayetteville; James Untermeyer of Columbus; Alan Untermeyer of Mountain Home; Judy Vanderhoof and husband Dennis of Lockhart; and Joan Allen and husband Jack of Austin.

She enjoyed dancing, gardening, yardwork (riding her John Deere lawn mower) and baking beautiful wedding and birthday cakes. Her family and friends loved the great desserts she made for them.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Henneke Funeral Home. A Parish Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m., following the visitation.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2018, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Columbus.

Burial will be in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery in Columbus.

Serving as pallbearers are Mark Untermeyer, Jim Untermeyer, Dwayne Henneke, Joe Philabaum, Joe Robinson, and Jerry Henneke, Sr. Honorary pallbearers are Woodrow Jasek, Butch Henneke, Cody Henneke, and Koldin Brown.

Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice.
