Laurie Mae Poenitzsch Heintschel

August 23, 1926 - September 10, 2018

On September 10, 2018 in Shaws Bend, Texas our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Laurie Mae (Poenitzsch) Heintschel, was called to be with the Lord at the age of 92.

Laurie was born on August 23, 1926, the daughter of Paul and Elizabeth (Horndt) Poenitzsch, in Shaws Bend, Texas. She was baptized on October 18, 1926 by Pastor Lindenberg and confirmed on Pentecost day, June 1, 1941 by Pastor W. A. Flaehmeir at the Shaws Bend Lutheran Church. She was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellinger, TX.

Laurie attended school through the 8th grade at the country school in Shaws Bend. Her working years began with a job as a live-in nanny/cook/housekeeper for the Dr. Yeldeman family of Columbus. She became very close to the two children and liked taking care of the large two-story home. She even traveled to California and Nevada with the family. Her next job took her to the hospital in East Bernard where she performed nursing duties. These included tending patients, cooking, and assisting doctors. It was hard, but fulfilling work. She would travel home to Shaws Bend for visits on the bus.

Laurie married Harry J. Heintschel on October 29, 1955 at St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinger with Pastor Raymond Durst officiating. They were married 44 years before he died in 1999. They made their home in Shaw's Bend and raised a son and a daughter.

She loved being a homemaker. She really liked housekeeping, sewing, yard work, and gardening. She raised vegetables, canning and preserving, even in her last years. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Family and friends looked forward to her homemade bread, cinnamon rolls, and divinity candy. Laurie loved taking care of family and keeping records of the Poenitzsch family history. She also found fun in dominoes and music - even attending a Dwight Yoakum concert. Most of all, she always wanted to be busy and productive.

Laurie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, infant son, son-in-law Jeffrey Reed, her brothers and their spouses- Lloyd and Lillie, Edwin and Alvina, Lawrence and Jesse, Gilbert and Laverne, Calvin and Marie, Jack, and Pete and Margaret and sister Lurline and husband Art Willbern.

She is survived by her son Gerald and wife Patti of Shaws Bend, TX her daughter Janice of Bellville; her grandchildren Bruce (wife Michelle) Heintschel, Bryan (wife Jill) Heintschel, Natalie (husband J.W.) Wright, Wesley Heintschel, and Justin (fiancee Angel) Reed; her great-grandchildren Tyler, Brett, and Haley Heintschel, McKinley and Madelyn Wright, and soon to be born AllieKae Reed. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as Heintschel family members including sister-in-law Adeline Heintschel, brothers-in-law Leon (Joan), Milton (Anne), Lambert (Angela) Heintschel, sisters-in-law Gladys (Theo) Svec, and Artie Lee Schultz. A special thank you to the Brazos Valley Hospice caregivers and the St. John Lutheran Church family for all the care and love these last months.
