Lurline Poenitzsch Willbern

June 19, 1928 - September 6, 2018

Lurline Poenitzsch Willbern, age 90, passed away on September 6, 2018 in Victoria, Texas. She was born on June 19, 1928 to Paul and Elizabeth (Horndt) Poenitzsch in Shaws Bend, Texas. She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Shaws Bend Lutheran Church.

Lurline went to school through the 8th grade at a two room country school before being recruited by Columbus Hospital to work as a nurse's aid. It was while she was working at the hospital that she met Art Willbern, whom she married on March 20, 1948. During the first years of their marriage, Art's job moved them to multiple towns across Texas. She always left a rent house cleaner than she found it. Over the course of her career, she worked at Columbus Hospital, Hohf Hospital in Victoria and as a sales clerk in the fabric department at JC Penney. However, her major occupations were wife, mother and homemaker. Lurline and Art had six children and were married for 43 years until his death in 1991.

Lurline enjoyed bowling, cards, dominoes, sewing and quilting. She was a wonderful cook and excellent wife, mother and role model. She loved gatherings with family and friends. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Woodmen of the World. She was also a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Ellinger.

She was preceded in death by her parents Paul and Elizabeth Poenitzsch, husband Art Willbern, son-in-law Carlos Boedeker, brothers and sisters-in-law Lloyd and Lillie Poenitzsch, Edwin and Alvina Poenitzsch, Lawrence and Jesse Poenitzsch, Gilbert and Laverne Poenitzsch, Calvin and Marie Poenitzsch, Jack Poenitzsch, and Pete and Margaret Poenitzsch.

She is survived by daughters Carolyn Barnett and husband Mike, Cindy Urban and husband Leonard, Kathy Martindale and husband Raymon, Sherial Boedeker and Mary Willbern, son David Willbern and wife Betty, all of Victoria. She is also survived by sister Laurie Heintschel of Shaws Bend, eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tadd Willbern, Steven Urban, Michael Urban, Jason Barnett, Dane Martindale and Michael Gonzalez.

Visitation will be on Sunday, September 9, 2018 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Henneke Funeral Home, 1515 Montezuma St., Columbus, Texas 78934. The funeral service will be on Monday, September 10, 2018 at 2:00 pm, also at Henneke Funeral Home with Pastor Marcia Kifer officiating. Burial will follow at Brune Cemetery in Shaws Bend.
