Lawrence Jerome Ruether

Lawrence Jerome Ruether, 80, died Monday, February 26, 2018 at his home in Eagle Lake.

Lawrence leaves his wife of 58 years, Oze Ruether; his son, Mark Ruether and wife Dee Ruether; his daughter Melissa and husband Clark Peterson; Sister Ludie Dennis, Sister Mary Ann Sommerfeld and husband El Gene, Sister Joyce Muras; Brother C. J. Ruether and wife Gloria; brother-in-law Mike Anderson. His grandchildren Garrett Neubauer and friend Kayla Kolafa, Kristen Neubauer, Mason Ruether and Kaylen Neubauer. Step-grandchildren Marshall and Laci Peterson, Rachel and Brett Barten, Hank Peterson, and Lori Peterson. Step-great grandchildren Rhilyn and Westyn Barten and Lane Kolafa and expectant great grandbaby Neubauer which he would have loved to have met. He also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Lawrence was preceded in death by infant daughter at birth Margaret Ann Ruether, mother and father Charlie and Mary Ruether, sister Jeanette Anderson, brothers-in-law Daniel Gerik, Sr., Lucious Dennis, and Henry Muras. Son-in-law Darryl Neubauer.

Born in Ellinger, Texas on February 10, 1938 to Charles D. and Mary Mascheck Ruether and raised in Fayetteville, Texas. Lawrence graduated from Fayetteville High School. He married his sweetheart Oze Ruether (on her birthday) November 15, 1959. They spent their married life in Eagle Lake, Texas.

Lawrence worked at many jobs during his time in Eagle Lake. His Uncle Victor Mascheck’s Gulf Station, The Ford dealership, Lake Motors, and after retirement he worked with Harold Raabe in his home repair shop. Lawrence was an ASE Certified Master Mechanic and was very proud of that accomplishment. There weren’t many people in town that didn’t have Mr. Ruether work on their vehicles.

After retirement he enjoyed his days at home working with his flowers and spending time with all of the “daycare kids”. He loved those kids and they loved him.
Not a whole lot of people knew that he was also an accomplished accordion player. He also was the one that helped his grandson Garrett learn how to play the accordion after is dad passed away. He dearly loved all of his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them and sharing a cold Dr. Pepper, a snickers bar and some ice cream.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus from 5pm to 7pm and Rosary at 7:00pm.

Funeral will be on Thursday, March 1, 2018, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Columbus at 10:00am with burial to follow at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery in Columbus.
